Abstract

Relevance: This review explores the impact of virtual sports on visual skills, opening doors to knowledge about these
emerging sports, learning more about their risks and benefits on visual abilities and their potential as innovative
visual training tools.

Abstract: E-sports represent a rapidly evolving phenomenon fueled by advancements in new technologies. In recent
years, these sports have gained popularity due to their accessible and engaging format, although the debate on
whether they should be classified as sports persists.
Given that this professional field remains relatively immature, there are significant gaps in understanding how to approach
it and what guidelines should be implemented to ensure players maintain their health. Therefore, the objective
of this literature review is to investigate the potential relationship between virtual sports and visual skills. It also
aims to examine the most common injuries and preventive measures.

Numerous studies suggest that video games positively influence visual skills, such as peripheral vision and visual
perception. However, the impact on players can be both positive and negative, varying depending on the type of
game. Regarding visual health, the most common complaints include eye strain, ocular surface problems, and dry
eye syndrome (DES). Furthermore, these studies emphasize the importance of promoting preventive methods to
avoid pathologies in this type of athlete and underscore the need for future research in this field.
